Hospitals' price files carry every code they bill — and a great many strings that only look like codes. Before a price is shown for one, it has to pass a test that is not a judgment: is this code in a public CMS list, or do hospitals only agree among themselves that it exists? Type a code or a word to look one upⓘ.

Of 98,662 distinct strings the sampled hospitals filed under CPT/HCPCS, 16,596 are codes a CMS list knows and 75,507 are well-formed codes that two or more hospitals agree on. The other 6,559 are chargemaster item numbers, revenue codes and fragments that pass for codes. They are kept here, labelled, because a dataset that hides what it threw away is asking to be trusted rather than checked.
